Dr. Kurien was born in a christian family in Kerala. Commonly known as the father of the white revolution in India, he led Operation Flood, the world’s largest agricultural program in India. He also led the establishment and success of the much-trusted dairy products brand – “Amul”.

He established 30 farmer and worker-managed institutions and played a pivotal role in setting up the Delhi Milk Scheme. It was only because of his efforts that India surpassed the US and became the largest milk producer in the world in 1998. So, the national milk day of India is celebrated to honor the birthday of the great revolutionist Dr. Verghese Kurien.

26th November is celebrated every year as the national milk day in India. Every year the union ministry of National Husbandry and Dairying bestows the Gopal Ratna Awards at the Veterinary college ground in Guwahati, Assam. There is a lack of proper infrastructure to protect the cattle from the cold breeze as sometimes it leads to their death.
