In the first round of the World Women’s Boxing Championships in Istanbul at 48 kg, Nitu Ghanghas, a two-time winner of the World Youth Boxing, defeated renowned Romanian boxer Steluta Duta.

There is no doubting the fear one must experience before facing Mary Kom, a strong and six-time boxing world champion. Nitu was overjoyed and still in shock after securing her spot in the women’s 48kg division at the Commonwealth Games. Nitu’s dedication has paid off, as she is prepared to enter Commonwealth Games 2022.

The CWG will begin from July 28 to August 8. Nevertheless, the 21-year-old will face several formidable opponents. The whole country has high hopes that Nitu would grab that prestigious medal. Other than Nitu, check this list of sports stars who can win a medal for the country at the Commonwealth Games.

Everything You Need To Know About Nitu Ghanghas

Ghanghas, a 21-year-old hails from Bhiwani’s Dhanana village in Haryana. Ghanghas, who started her boxing career in 2012, has run into several challenges. In her village, where women are expected to help around the house, she was persuaded to start boxing after hearing about Vijender Singh, a well-known boxer from Bhiwani who won an Olympic bronze medal.

She learned her skills at the prestigious Bhiwani Boxing Club (BBC). Ghanghas stated in one of her conversations with the Indian Express that she still clearly remembers taking her first bus ride of 20 kilometers from the town of Dhanana to the Bhiwani Boxing Club with her father and, another boxer Sakshi Choudhary to train with instructor Jagdish Singh.

When her father, Jai Bhagwan, met her outside the institution, she had just finished her first, two-hour training session in 2012.

She required two and a half hours of training each morning and evening in addition to attendance at school. Jai Bhagwan, her father, reportedly put his career in danger to make sure his daughter gave it her all. Bhagwan, a Chandigarh Vidhan Sabha employee, returned to Dhanana and began attending training sessions with Ghanghas every day while on unpaid leaves from his job. He later left his position.

In 2015, the father-daughter team required therapy in a Delhi hospital for more than a month owing to a pelvic injury.

According to the report, Bhagwan decided to sell the family’s car and borrow money from friends and relatives to sustain the family.

She won her first national title that year and proceeded to represent the nation. By earning gold medals at the 2017 and 2018 Youth World Championships and another gold medal at the 2018 Asian Youth Championships, she showcased her brilliance on big stages.

But in 2019, she had a severe roadblock due to a shoulder issue. The COVID outbreak seriously hampered her training, and she lost two years of boxing.

She underwent extensive treatment following the injury, and in 2021 she triumphed at the Strandja Memorial with the gold medal.
