Developing Interest in Henna

Pavan Dhanjal moved with her parents to the United Kingdom sometime in the 1970s. Pavan developed an interest in Henna and its application because of her mother’s salon. Pavan’s mother used to run a salon. Her mother used to do bridal makeup and henna. Pavan was just fifteen when she started practicing henna designs.

Opening of Pavan Henna Bar

Pavan gained an appreciation for her work in Henna designs and started her own henna bar by the name ‘Pavan Henna Bar.’ Her goal behind the startup was to make Henna accessible and popular among everyone regardless of race or culture. She mentioned, “Getting eyebrows and nails done is a basic beauty routine. I want the use of henna to be added to this basic beauty routine.”

World’s Fastest Henna Artist

For her work, she received a lot of appreciation. She also entered the Guinness Book of Records for being the fastest Henna artist at the age of 21. Her parents were always very supportive of her work and motivated her to pursue her dreams.

Challenges Faced by Pavan

It wasn’t easy for her to pursue her passion as her career. She faced many challenges along the way. The Indian population did not give her art the respect it deserved. Many just referred to her as a ‘Mehendi wali.’ The British population did not approve of her using Henna on the white people.

When she made Henna designs for Perrie Edwards, she was criticized for her work. She received comments like- “Do not use henna on white people. It is not a part of our culture.” Such comments were very hurtful, but she did not let them demotivate her. She considers India and London both as her home, and both the places hold a special place in her heart.

Henna for All

Many people appreciated her work and approached her to get unique Henna designs made. She has opened the franchise outlet of Pavan Henna Bar in different parts of the world. Clients from different ethnic backgrounds and cultures take services from the Henna Bar. Pavan has a strong British, Asian and Arab clientele.

Pavan Henna Bar offers a wide range of henna and henna designs to the customers. They offer classic black henna, white henna, unicorn henna, non-toxic henna, vegan-friendly henna, etc. Recently, they introduced a body paint henna that glows in the dark.

Current Work

During the corona outbreak, the Henna bars had to be closed temporarily. Pavan conducts online workshops frequently. Her products are also available for anyone interested in trying them. Pavan’s husband also supports and helps her out in all her ventures.
