Henna in earlier times was used to cool the skin. Over time, it has become an important part of our culture and is being widely used. Henna is an important element of Bridal functions in India. It is considered auspicious. The motivational story of today is of Pavan Dhanjal, an Indian Henna artist based in the United Kingdom.
Developing Interest in Henna
Pavan Dhanjal moved with her parents to the United Kingdom sometime in the 1970s. Pavan developed an interest in Henna and its application because of her mother’s salon. Pavan’s mother used to run a salon. Her mother used to do bridal makeup and henna. Pavan was just fifteen when she started practicing henna designs.
Opening of Pavan Henna Bar
Pavan gained an appreciation for her work in Henna designs and started her own henna bar by the name ‘Pavan Henna Bar.’ Her goal behind the startup was to make Henna accessible and popular among everyone regardless of race or culture. She mentioned, “Getting eyebrows and nails done is a basic beauty routine. I want the use of henna to be added to this basic beauty routine.”

For her work, she received a lot of appreciation. She also entered the Guinness Book of Records for being the fastest Henna artist at the age of 21. Her parents were always very supportive of her work and motivated her to pursue her dreams.
Challenges Faced by Pavan
It wasn’t easy for her to pursue her passion as her career. She faced many challenges along the way. The Indian population did not give her art the respect it deserved. Many just referred to her as a ‘Mehendi wali.’ The British population did not approve of her using Henna on the white people.
When she made Henna designs for Perrie Edwards, she was criticized for her work. She received comments like- “Do not use henna on white people. It is not a part of our culture.” Such comments were very hurtful, but she did not let them demotivate her. She considers India and London both as her home, and both the places hold a special place in her heart.
