What is Indian Constitution Day?

Indian Constitution Day is when we celebrate the adoption of the Constitution of India. Every year, the 26th of November is observed as the “Bhartiya Samvidhan Divas.” This day is one way that we people know and understand the constitutional values of India. After Independence, the constitution acted as the peacemaker that really helped in the declining rate of unethical incidents that happened in our country.

History of Indian Constitution Day

We acknowledge that our independence was secured on August 15, 1947, and on January 26, 1950, we commemorate Republic Day, marking the day the Indian constitution took effect. However, it’s important to note that during this period, our constitution was neither established nor documented in any specific form.

However, in 1934, the demand for the Constituent Assembly was made by M.N Roy, a communist party leader. This demand was taken into consideration by the Congress party and by 1940, the British government accepted this demand finally, Indians were allowed to construct the first draft of the Indian constitution in August of that year.

Why 26th November is celebrated as Indian Constitution Day?

The constitution effect came into light on Republic Day but drafting and writing our constitution was a long process. After the Britishers granted us the permission of drafting our constitution.

On August 29, 1947, a Drafting Committee, led by Dr. B.R. Ambedkar, was established to formulate a draft constitution. The Committee successfully concluded its task on November 26, 1949. The finalization process culminated on January 24, 1950, with the members signing two handwritten copies of the agreement, one in Hindi and the other in English.

During this time, 11 sessions were held over the course of 166 days. This is the time between adoption and enforcement when extensive reading and translation from English to Hindi was completed.

Upon the culmination of all proceedings, on November 26, 1950, our constitution came into effect, marking the establishment of law and order in India for the first time. This is why November 26 is celebrated every year as Indian Constitution Day.

Understanding the importance of Indian Constitution Day, PM Narender Modi declared on 19th November 2015, that the 26th November of every year will be celebrated as Bhartiya Samvidhan Divas to promote constitutional values among the citizens.

Celebrating “Bhartiya Samvidhan Divas 2023”

Since 2015, the government has been celebrating Indian Constitution Day in an official manner. The important part of this celebration is the reading of the preamble and reaffirming our commitment towards our constitution. Bhartiya Samvidhan Divas 2023 is also going to be celebrated in the same manner. Various programs will be held in the Parliament and Vigyan Bhawan. Honourable President will also give the speech along with other Prime Minister, Vice President and Lok Sabha speaker.

Significance of Bhartiya Samvidhan Divas

Indian Constitution Day holds great significance and value. Our Indian constitution is the description of the powers and the duties of the governmental bodies. It also describes the fundamental rights and citizens’ responsibilities. The interesting fact is that India’s constitution is the world’s longest-written constitution. The Constitution took about 2 years, 11 months, and 17 days to complete.

India is a developing country and our constitution is flexible and open to change and modify as per the needs and requirements of the citizens of India.

Because of the Indian Constitution, we have our set of laws and orders that maintain the peace and harmony of the country. That is why, this day is also often known as Indian Law Day. Our constitution is the guiding light that makes sure our country functions smoothly and vibrantly.
