Byju Raveendran is the owner, the CEO, and the founder of Byju’s. He is an educator and an Indian Billionaire. He used to work as a service engineer in a multinational shipping company but then the idea of tutoring hundreds of students for competitive exams changed his life, leading him to be the owner of India’s largest ed-tech company.

Where it all began

Byju Raveendran was born in a coastal village of Kerala, Azhikode, in 1981. His father used to be a physics teacher and his mother was a mathematics teacher. Byju studied at a Malayalam medium school and completed his B.Tech from Government College of Engineering, Kannur. At the time when he was working as a service engineer, during a vacation he tutored some of his friends who were preparing for the CAT exam, then he himself took the exam twice and scored 100 percentile both times. After 2 years he decided quitting his job and started helping students to prepare for the exam.

Raveendran began teaching aspirants on the terrace of one of his close friend’s houses and from there the journey of Byjus began. At the start, he used to teach only for MBA exams, then he started full-time classes.

Soon, the number of students increased and he established his ed-tech firm Byju’s with the tagline “fall in love with learning”. Byju Raveendran’s teaching methods were so famous that at a time he had around twenty thousand students across many different states. 

With an amount only of two lacs he started his own coaching classes and moved from terrace to classroom. In 2009, Byju’s included online video learning program for the first time.

After 4 years of hard work, in 2015, Byju’s was launched by the name: Byju’s – The Learning App, helping students to learn via material on CAT, the NEET (National Eligibility and Entrance Test), the JEE (Joint Entrance Examination), the civil services exam and much more.

Byju’s Becoming a Brand

When the number of students started increasing, Byju’s became so popular that it had more than 3.5 lacs annual subscriptions with the usage of 40 minutes a day on average and had more than 6 million downloads.

Byju’s offers highly engaging and effective programs for students studying in classes 4-12 including competitive exams like CAT, JEE, NEET IAS, GMAT, and GRE. One of the biggest advantages of Byju’s is that its courses are less costly than traditional classrooms. According to students, it is much easier to learn from the application.

Byju’s bought Tutor Vista and EduRite, recently. Raveendran became the official sponsor of the Indian Cricket Team jersey in 2019.

Achievements of Raveendran

Raveendran has won many awards including Big Research NDTV Profit Business & Service Excellence Award, CNBC-TV 18 Crisil Emerging India Award, Deloitte Technology Fast 50 India, and Fast 500.

In 2017 Harvard University added Byju’s app as a case study. In 2019, the net worth of Byju’s reached $6.5 Billion. The application has more than 40 million subscribers and more than 12 million downloads on Play Store. In 2018, the application spread to the United States, United Kingdom, and many other English-speaking nations.

In 2020, Raveendran along with his brother and wife had a net worth of $3.05 billion. In 2021, Byju’s bought Aakash Educational Services Ltd. for $1 billion.

Investments till day

The very first investment in Byju’s was by Mohandas Pai and Ranjan Pai of Rs. 50 crores. It is the only startup which is funded by Mark Zuckerberg in Asia. In 2016, Byju received $50 Milion from organisation created by Mark Zuckerberg.

in 2011-12, Byju’s revenue was Rs. 4 crores, which increased to 12 crores in 2013, 20 crores in the Year 2014, and Rs 260 crores in 2017.
