Roman Saini – From An IAS Officer To The Co-Founder Of 11000 Cr Company Unacademy

Roman Saini proves this quote true. He is not just an educator but also a doctor and an ex- IAS officer. And to add to this he is also the co-founder of Unacademy, the largest education initiative company that provides both free and paid educational content for competitive exams.

This is his story and how the idea of Unacademy started.

Roman Saini – The Beginning

Roman Saini was born in Raikaranpur village in Jaipur, India on 27th July 1991. He was born in a middle–class but academically rich family, which helped him to excel in his studies from childhood.

After completing his schooling, he appeared for the AIIMS entrance exam and became the youngest person to crack that examination at the age of 16. Roman went to AIIMS to pursue his MBBS.

Roman Saini’s family consists of his father, mother, brother, and sister. Roman’s father is an engineer, while his mother is a doctor. His brother, Avesh Saini is a pediatrician, and his sister, Ayushi Saini is a medical student.

Roman Saini’s Career

Roman Saini began his career as a junior resident doctor at AIIMS. While serving as a doctor, he visited various medical camps in poverty-ridden areas of India. In those areas he saw, people struggling for even basic amenities. After watching all this, Roman decided to go for civil services to contribute to society on a larger scale.

When he was in his second year while pursuing MBBS, one of his friends, Gaurav Munjal, approached him with a billion-dollar idea of opening an educational portal.

Later Roman Saini joined hands with Gaurav Munjal, Hemesh Singh, and Sachin Gupta to start – Unacademy, an educational venture that went on to become one of the most important educational portals preparing for aspiring students who are preparing for competitive exams.

At the age of 22, Roman Saini cleared the Civil Service Examination in his first attempt and secured the AIR 18. He was one of the youngest aspirants to clear the examination. He did his training at the Lal Bahadur Shastri Academy of Administration (LBSNAA) in Mussoorie. And then he joined as the Assistant Collector at Jabalpur, Madhya Pradesh.

In 2016, when Roman Saini found that his true call is Unacademy, he resigned from his post of Assistant Collector. He gave up the job to give more time to his initiative – Unacademy.

The Building Of Unacademy

Roman Saini, quickly analyzed the market and gathered a team comprising of teachers, civil servants, engineers, doctors, and experts of other fields. He started building the YouTube channel of Unacademy by uploading videos of educational content related to different subjects such as – IT, Civil Services, and foreign languages. Soon after he launched the channel, it starts garnering a huge amount of views. And the proof that the channel was effective came to people’s knowledge when 10 people who cleared the civil service examination, accepted that this channel helped them crack the examination.

Some Facts Related To Roman Saini

Roman Saini is described as an anti-social and introverted person by his family and friends, as he hates going to social gatherings and mostly stays in his own world. Roman also has a liking of music and he likes to play the guitar in his free time, his favorite musician is Led Zeppelin. He also likes to listen to Arijit Singh.

Surprisingly, Roman Saini was a pretty average student in school and he had no interest in studies, later he developed a liking for biology as a subject led him to sit for the AIIMS entrance exam and clear it.

When asked why he has swung his career around so many times, Roman replies – “I believe we can achieve anything if we want it. For me, there were no external benchmarks to conquer. I have done everything that I really enjoyed doing. I have done everything that I really enjoyed doing. I play the guitar as I love music, not because I aspire to go to Trinity College in England. Medicals, civil services, to now giving back to millions of UPSC aspirants – all these have stemmed from the internal drive”.
