The Commonwealth Games 2022, the mega sports event is from 28 July to 8 August 2022 in Birmingham, England. The largest ever integrated para-sport program, as well as a record number of mixed events such as diving, swimming relays, and para-athletics relays, will be contested across 15 venues in the West Midlands regions of England. 

It will be India’s 18th appearance in the Commonwealth Games 2022. Since 2010, India’s performance at the CWG has been consistent and remarkable to say. India has consistently sent over 200 athletes to the quadrennial showpiece.

The Commonwealth Games 2022 in Birmingham, UK, is expected to see a sizable Indian contingent at the 11-day event. 

The list of the Indian contingent with a team of 108 men and 107 women, who will be competing in 15 sports, was named. The country will also participate in Women’s Cricket, making it a debut. Cricket will be an event and will have the T20 format. 

A lot will be expected from Indian athletes in the Commonwealth Games 2022, especially after a huge milestone in the Tokyo 2020 Olympics. 

The mega sports event will be held in Birmingham, England from 28 July to 8 August 2022, where the athletes and sports person would be competing against the Gold, Silver, and Bronze medal.

Athletics – Commonwealth Games 2022

Neeraj Chopra, Dutee Chand, and Hima Das are among the athletes on the athletics team for the Commonwealth Games 2022 in Birmingham.

Following the National Inter-State Athletics Championships in Chennai, a 37-member squad was selected for the Commonwealth Games 2022. It will be headlined by the Tokyo 2020 champion, Neeraj Chopra. 

The expectations are high, and we hope to see athletes breaking records and clinching the gold. 

Badminton – Commonwealth Games 2022

In this sport, a total of 10 players are selected for the mega sports event in Birmingham. PV Sindhu will be the leading shuttler in the women’s singles. Kidambi Srikanth and Laksya Sen will be competing in the men’s singles. Also, India will compete against women’s doubles, men’s doubles, and mixed doubles. 

By the value of this game in the BMF World Ranking, India qualified for the mixed team event. Following the Senior Selection Trials, a squad of ten players was selected on 20 April 202 for the Commonwealth Games 2022. 

Boxing – Commonwealth Games 2022

It’s a sweet pleasure for India in this field as Amit Panghal and Mohammad Hussamuddin, from the 2018 Commonwealth Games have cut in Birmingham. The five-time Asian medalist Shiva Thapa also qualified for the sports event. Following the selections, eight boxers were selected, including four boxers Nikhat Zareen was selected for the CWG 2022. 

Mary Kom did not qualify for the Commonwealth Games 2022 due to an injury she suffered during a trial. 

Cricket – Commonwealth Games 2022

Cricket will make its second appearance in the CWG program in Birmingham in 2022. The first, in Kuala Lumpur in 1998, featured a men’s 50-over tournament, but Birmingham 2022 will feature a women’s T20I format. 

The 15-member Indian team is led by captain Harmanpreet Kaur as they battle out against seven other nations for the medal. The Indian team is one of the five teams that qualified for the Commonwealth Games 2022 courtesy of its ranking in the ICC WT201. 

Weightlifting – Commonwealth Games 2022

Mirabai Chanu, an icon, a silver medalist at the Tokyo Olympics, and a reigning Commonwealth champion, will lead the event. The 12-squad member weightlifting Indian contingent is one of the strongest teams to have qualified in the mega sports event. 

Other weightlifting stars including Achinta Sheuli, Ajay Sing, Jeremy Lalrinnunga, and Purnima Pandey, have fixed their sports at the Commonwealth Weightlifting Championships 2021. The rest of the athletes made their Birmingham cut by qualifying for the Singapore Weightlifting International 2022. 

 Wrestling – Commonwealth Games 2022

India will be sending a 16-member squad for the Wrestling sport in the event. The team is led by the Tokyo Olympics Ravi Kumar Dahiya. It will also star Bajrang Punia and Sakshi Mali, who won bronze medals at the Tokyo 2020 and Rio de Janeiro 2016.

Hockey – Commonwealth games 2022 

Both Indian hockey team players, both men’s and women’s have qualified for the Commonwealth Games 2022 based on the FIH rankings. Each team will have 10 players, respectively. 

The women’s team will be aiming for their second gold as they had won their first ever gold at the CWG in 2002. The men’s team has yet to strike their target at the gold medal after winning two silver medals in 2019 and 2014, which are considered to be the best finishing stats. 

Table Tennis – Commonwealth Games 2022

As per the ITTf world rankings, both men’s and women’s teams have qualified for the mega sports event in Birmingham, UK. A squad of eight members will be coming to the event with two reserve players – Manush Shah and Swastika Ghosh. 

Swimming – Commonwealth Games 2022 

Four team members will compete in the activity Swimming at the CWG 2022 in Birmingham, UK. Sajan Prakash (butterfly) and Srihari Natara (backstroke) will compete in the men’s 50m, 100m, and 200m after winning the South Asian Games. Kushagra Rawat will compete in the men’s 200m, 400m, and 1500m freestyle events, while Advait Page will compete in the men’s 1500m freestyle.

Squash – Commonwealth Games 2022

In the CWG, nine Indian contingents have qualified for the Squash. Saurav Ghosal and Joshna Chinappa, after clinching silver medals in the previous edition, will be aiming to win gold this year at the Birmingham sports event. 

Judo – Commonwealth Games 2022 

India selected a team of six members for Squash for the event. There will be three men and three women competing for the medals. Each player will fight for a specific weight group in winning the medal. India is yet to crack this sport and win an entitlement in this field. 

Cycling – Commonwealth Games 2022

Two cyclists were officially selected from India for the CWG – Ronaldo Singh and David Beckham. They will aim to secure India’s first medal at the sports event. 

Triathlon – Commonwealth Games 2022 

A total of four athletes would be participating in the Commonwealth Games 2022. A triathlon is an activity of a multisport race consisting of swimming, cycling, racing, and running over various distances. There will be two women and men in the field at Birmingham. India will be quenching for their first-ever medal at the tournament. 

A total of more than 200 Indian athletes and teams would be traveling to Birmingham for the Commonwealth Games 2022. India has shown consistency and willpower in the last decade at the event. The arena is a major event for sportspeople to win medals and shine the country’s flag high. 

India has won 503 medals to date since its debut at the CWG. It won 181 gold, 173 silver, and 149 at the event. 

The 11-day event conducted in Birmingham will see a total of 72 countries and territories participate in the mega event. Many players and teams would represent their country, making it a glamorous sporting event.

Sports are more than physical activity. The nation has continuously improved its sports contenders in the last few years at Commonwealth Games. The most medals it hauled were at the 2010 Commonwealth Games, which was held in New Delhi, India. This year, we hope to see more names shining.
