The Himalayan region is cold and chilling. Indian army personnel and officers stay in extreme weather to protect the Indian borders. Life in such cold areas is harsh and difficult. Sonam Wangchuk developed a solar military tent to make the lives of people posted at borders relatively easy.

Sonam Wangchuk is an Indian innovator, engineer, and education reformist. He is also the character behind Phunsuk Wangdu portrayed in the movie ‘3 idiots.’ He is the founder of the Students Educational and cultural movement in Ladakh.

Features of The Solar Military Tent

The solar military tent invented by Sonam Wangchuk can be heated through solar panels. The front of the tent is called the Greenhouse section. It uses solar energy to heat. The solar tent can accommodate up to 10 people, and it has a sleeping chamber where the military people can rest or sleep.

The tent is covered with a windcheater which protects the inmates from the cold and harsh weather outside. The tent is lightweight and easily portable. Each component of the tent when disassembled weighs less than 30 kilograms.

Advantages of The Solar Military Tent

There are several advantages of the solar military tent. First, it uses solar energy which, is a renewable source of energy. Second, it replaces the use of kerosene which India imports from the middle east. Less usage and burning of kerosene will lead to less pollution in the hilly areas. This is beneficial for the environment. The military people will stay warm in temperatures below -14 degrees celsius.

Plans For Future

A new version of the tent made of aluminum would soon be launched. The tent would cost around five lakhs, which is lesser than the amount the Indian army spends currently on accommodation. The environmentally friendly tent is economical and spacious. It is a Make-in-India initiative that also sends the message to boycott Chinese products.
