At an age where most teenagers are still scrolling through memes, dealing with heartbreaks or best, deciding where they want to do their further studies, this teenager from Amritsar created a revolutionary product for not just her city but for the earth. Keeping her heart in good faith and for the right reason she started working on a novel project and before completing her class 12th she constructed India’s first completely sustainable Public Toilet the ultimate Swachh Bharat Abhiyan.
Ruhani Verma is the brilliant mind behind the construction of India’s first carbon-negative Public Toilet out of 100% recyclable or recycled material using 4 lakh pieces of single-use plastic at Shri Guru Ram Das Ji International Airport in Amritsar. She took the Swachh Bharat Abhiyan literally and created the most sustainable way to follow the Abhiyan.
The amusing part is she is just 17, still completing her class 12 from Jayshree Periwal International School
Ruhani wants to be an architect but the idea of sustainability always moved her as a human being, she always wished to do more for the good of society while still pursuing her dreams and attaining her future goals. To quench the thrust of her ethics she started working on the project SWACHHआलया supporting Swachh Bharat Abhiyan and introduced her way of helping the earth with it.
As an Amritsar native, she opted to begin her initiative from home and discovered that the Amritsar Airport’s parking lot lacked restrooms and the Swachh Bharat Abhiyan was still undone. This was her motivational push, she already had the plan in mind only the location was missing. Amritsar Airport was the greatest site for this environmentally friendly toilet she diligently wished to make.
Swachh Bharat Abhiyan – India’s First Carbon-Negative Public Toilet
The basic principle of this initiative is sustainability. She planned to construct India’s first such structure out of environmentally friendly bricks. Around 30% of the bricks used in the construction of the toilet were made of single-use plastic, while the remaining 70% is comprised of garbage and silica dust.
Waste generation, particularly single-use plastic litter all over our country, is a global concern, not just in India. This issue has only become worse with each passing year. This toilet would be able to address this issue. Despite the Swatch Bharat Abhiyan running in full vough it was ignored at such a pivotal place.
The complete toilet building was designed in a modular fashion. She stated that no natural resources such as soil or water were employed in the production of Silica Plastic Blocks (SPB). Everything is entirely constructed of garbage. All of the materials utilised in the project are recyclable, and no cement was used in the construction process. According to Verma, an SPB brick is 3 times more durable than a traditional red clay brick. Therefore this construction will ensure sustainability as well as durability.
“During the course of this endeavour, I was able to salvage 4 lakh packets of single-use plastic & recycle them to build 1 foot by 4-inch bricks.” If the plastic was lined up for 150 kilometers.
As this construction utilises zero water or concrete to produce a carbon-negative building, the notion of interlocking bricks, similar to Lego blocks, was employed to connect them together,

Her initiative was launched by MP Gurjeet Aujla & airport director V K Seth. This project greatly supports our very own Prime Minister Narendra Modi Ji’s Swachh Bharat Abhiyan Mission and ban on single-use plastic. On Saturday, MP Gurjeet Aujla and airport director V K Seth opened ‘Toilet 01,’ dubbed Swachh-Alyaa, at the Sri Guru Ram Das Jee International Airport at Amritsar.
India has been struggling with difficulties in garbage collection and appropriate waste management, and despite a prohibition on single-use plastic across major cities throughout the nation, Swachh Bharat Abhiyan, and many more policies, plastic waste can be found littered all over the country. As a result of resolving this issue, Ruhani would like to establish more community restrooms in rural regions and throughout the country.
She wishes to be an architect when she grows up and hopes to study more sustainable design and come up with more similar models to make things easy for the environment.
