Every day is Environment Day for father-daughter duo Aravind Tharunsri and Thaaragai Aarathana. They’re also on a quest to make our oceans cleaner and create awareness on marine ecosystem. Thaaragai, the daughter of a scuba diver from Karappakam, Chennai, has been following in her father’s legacy since she was a child.

Thaaragai, who was born in Karapakkam, Chennai, has always had a special connection to the sea. Her father, Aravind Tharunsri, is a scuba diving expert and trainer who has inspired her to explore undersea life when she was a child.

Tharaagai Arathana, an eight-year-old environmental icon, began diving when she was just five years old. To safeguard marine life, she presently gathers plastic waste from the water.

How Did She Learn Diving At A Very Young Age

Aravind considers that acclimating children to the marine ecosystem at a young age is vital. He intended his child to be exposed to water since she was a baby, therefore she was introduced when she was just three days old.  She began floating when she was nine months. She began swimming at the age of two and a half years.

He used to take her with him wherever he went and make her feel at ease around water. She began diving at the age of five, although only in shallow waters, and by the age of seven, she was an expert swimmer and diver.

Father-Daughter Creates Awareness On Marine Ecosystem

Her father has been scuba diving for over 20 years and wanted his child to grow up knowing about the marine ecosystem, sea, and aquatic ecosystems. In Chennai and Puducherry, Aravind operates a scuba diving center.

She has a tremendous affinity for the ocean and is highly worried about the continually endangered marine ecosystem. In addition to scuba diving, the father-daughter duo has been cleaning beaches and the ocean, and also creating awareness regarding marine pollution.

As a scuba diver, Arvind has personally observed the level of pollution and its impact on the marine ecosystem. So the very least he could do is raise awareness and clean up.

He’s been cleaning up the seas and beaches for over 17 years and has gathered over 10,000 kilograms of plastic waste.

Aravind is now joined in his attempts to clean up the beach and the seas by his daughter. He and his daughter are both involved, and they have so far gathered over 600 kg of plastic wastes, which they sell to plastic scarp stores, which then recycle the wastes. Thaaraagi now desires to contribute the money from the sale of the waste to the Tamil Nadu Department of Environment.

Thaaragai lately swam an 18-kilometer stretch from Covelong to Neelankari, assisted by her father, under the subject “Save the Ocean.” In Assist World Records, she set a new record.

Awareness On Protecting Dugongs- The Sea Cow

Thaaragai is also raising awareness about endangered marine species, particularly the Dugong, in addition to beach and ocean clean-up.

Together with the Wildlife Institute of India, he has been providing training to the forest department, the marine police, and the fisheries dept. He was given the opportunity to help the Wildlife Institute of India in its attempts to save the rare dugong. She would accompany him to the awareness programs sessions anytime he went to train them, and she eventually got interested in dugongs.

She has been giving presentations to schoolchildren to increase knowledge regarding the importance of protecting marine animals such as dugongs and marine ecosystems.

Aravind, a marine conservationist, has encouraged his daughter to participate in his activities because he believes it is important to instill such ideals in children at an early age. After all, they are the future.

  1. You actually make it seem so easy with your presentation however I in finding this topic to be actually one thing which I feel I’d by no means understand. It seems too complex and very vast for me. I am taking a look forward for your next submit, I will try to get the hang of it!
