Vaayu is a biogas technology that aims to empower common people by providing renewable sources of energy. Vaayu works to convert the energy captured by the sun into burnable methane gas. The Maker of Vaayu
Priyadarshan Sahasrabuddhe is a 34-year-old engineer from Pune who designed and came up with the idea of Vaayu. Vaayu has a balloon-like structure where the converted methane gas is stored. The balloon-like structure is connected to a pipeline, then it is further connected to the stove.
The Process of Making Vaayu
Priyadarshan used to collect waste from his neighbors and used to try converting it into biogas at his home. The neighbors actively contributed and provided sufficient waste to him for trying out his experiment. Approximately 12 kilograms of waste was provided by the neighbors daily.
Organic Waste to Methane Gas
It is a bacterial process where the carbohydrates in the organic waste are converted into methane gas. The bacteria responsible for this is called Methogene. The gas produced from Vaayu gets stored in the balloon-shaped sac. It is exactly like the regular LPG or piped CNG.
Availability of Different Sizes
The biogas technology Vaayu is available in two sizes. The first one can manage up to 2 kgs of waste per day. It provides 20-40 minutes of cooking time each day. The second one can manage up to 5 kilograms of waste per day.
Vaayu Mitra: A Community of Like Minded People
Priyadarshan has also started an informal community. Like-minded enthusiasts come up with innovative solutions and share them with others. The community is known as Vaayu Mitra. It provides biofuel solutions according to the number of people living in a house.
The Impact of Vaayu
The initiative of Vaayu has helped in saving 950 LPG cylinders per year. It has also managed to save up to 750 kilograms of waste and 30 kilograms of fossil carbon dioxide emissions every year. The biogas technology gives the common people a chance to create their own methane gas at home. It provides the individuals the joy of making their own green fuel. It also promotes sustainable living and is good for the environment.
