The “Human Calculator” Vivek Raj who is a math teacher and his mastery of Vedic maths has given him an exceptional talent to make calculations faster than a calculator.
Though we all have studied mathematics in our schools but we are living in a time where it is difficult to remember even our own phone numbers. Due to stress of exams, we all perform simplest calculations on a calculator and thinking about doing complex calculations mentally seems next to impossible. But there exists a man who does calculations as accurately and fast as a calculator.
This fastest human calculator who is a native of Aaraatuvazhi, Kerala knows the multiplication table till one lakh accurately.
Early life of the human calculator
His interest developed in numbers when he was gifted a Calculator. In his seventh grade, he was able to solve higher level mathematical problems very easily.
His special skill is not based on any shortcuts or formulas but the focusing on numbers for years. He notices numbers everywhere and it was 12 years of hard work that created this skill in him.
The motivation behind this unique talent is a 1965 book Vedic Mathematics by Bharati Krishna Tirtha.
Vedic maths is an Indian equivalent of abacus which has several techniques to solve the arithmetic in a simpler and faster way. He was also inspired by Scott Flans Berg who is also known as the human calculator who could solve complex problems fastest since his childhood.
Awards won by the human calculator
His talent has been recognized all around the world. He holds three National Records for the fastest continuous addition and multiplication. He also has the world record to his credit by the Arabian Book of Records for the fastest Mind Math.
The human calculator’s ability to work like a calculator and solve mathematical problems without any errors led to his inclusion in Limca Book of Records for multiplying the number 67 to itself over and over in 15 seconds and got an 11 digit answer.
He also claimed a second record by adding the number 23 to itself over and over and reach to 7 digits in just 10 seconds.
Training institute by Vivek Raj
The human calculator also runs an educational institute in Alappuzha district named Vedic Math Monastery. Vedic Math Monastery teaches the age old concept of Vedic Mathematics.
To make students an expert in mathematics, he teaches students from the concept of Vedic mathematics. This concept is inspired from ancient mathematics which makes your way with numbers easy and your calculations 10-15 times faster.
To help students in overcoming their fear of mathematics and to make them interested in mathematics, he performs various shows on Mathematics in which he plays with numbers and we all proudly call him ‘mathemagician’- a mathematician who play magic tricks with numbers.
Vivek Raj also gave a proposal to government named as “Project Mathletics” to include Vedic Mathematics in educational syllabus. Though his project did not receive many positive responses yet but his efforts are aided by Alappuzha MP AM Arif and we hope that Project Mathletics comes into action soon and make learning mathematics fun.
