Early life

When the conjoined twins were born, doctors had a doubt in mind whether they would be able to survive for long. The conjoined twins were born at Delhi’s Sucheta Kriplani Hospital on June 14, 2003. Soon they were shifted to the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) in the hope of separation surgery. The doctors said the separation would lead to the loss of one twin and the surviving twin will suffer from a vascular and neurological loss in the lower limbs.

The parents of conjoined twins were Kamini and Surjit Kumar. Surjit is a taxi driver who already had 3 daughters, they could not support the twin babies then and the couple abandoned the conjoined twins when they were 2 months old.

The doctors at AIIMS contacted Amritsar’s Pingalwara and the conjoined twins were taken to All India Pingalwara Charitable Society (Regd.) in Amritsar on Independence Day, 15th August 2003. The home for the Destitute was founded by writer-philanthropist Bhagat Puran Singh. The conjoined twins received a warm welcome from Dr. Inderjit Kaur and she gave them the names Sohna and Mohna. The boys lovingly call her Biji.

Since the guest house was told by doctors at AIIMS to handle the conjoined sensitively and carefully, so they have designated a separate room in the guest house and 4 nurses took care of the conjoined twins in shifts.
