One such personality was Lata Mangeshkar, and her demise has saddened the entire nation. She had a difficult childhood, struggled, and went on to become the Queen of Melody India’s Nightingale. Today’s motivational story is based on her journey and how she became a symbol of woman empowerment in a male-dominated era.

Early Life of Lata Mangeshkar

Lata Mangeshkar was born on September 28, 1929, in Indore. Lata Mangeshkar was the eldest of Shevanti Mangeshkar’s and Dinanatha Mangeshkar. She belonged to a Maharashtrian Brahmin family. She was the eldest among the five children in the family. She was born in a family of theatrical actors and classical singers. Initially, her first name was Hema Mangeshkar, but later her father changed her name to Lata Mangeshkar. Lata’s father taught her classical singing. From an early age of 5, Lata Mangeshkar used to perform in her father’s musical shows. Later, she received musical training from Pandit Tulsidas Sharma, Aman Ali Khan Saheb, and Amanat Khan.

Challenges Faced By The Singer

Unfortunately, when Lata Mangeshkar was only thirteen years old her father passed away. Being the oldest child in the household the entire responsibility of the welfare of her family came on her shoulders. The singer used to travel in buses daily to meet Naushad Ali at his Khar West villa or in the studios hoping to get an opportunity to become a playback singer. In 1942, she worked for the first time as a playback singer in the movie Kiti Hasal. Her acting career also began in the same year. She also played roles of being a composer to a producer in later years.

Supporting The Family

The talented and gifted singer was the eldest sister of Asha Bhosle, Usha Mangeshkar, Hridaynath Mangeshkar, and Meena Mangeshkar. During a hard time, she took care of all her siblings and provided them with all that she could. Lata Mangeshkar has sung songs for more than 1000 Hindi movies. Additionally, she sang numerous songs in other regional languages as well.

Gaining Popularity

From the 1940s to the 1980s Lata Mangeshkar was the most popular singer. Almost all the film directors wanted her in their movies as the lead playback singer. She sang songs for heroines even half her age. Each of her songs came out to be melodious and full of emotions. Vinayak Damodar Karnataki, a family friend of Lata helped her find work in the Marathi and Hindi film industries.

Impact Made On Others

Lata Mangeshkar sang ‘ Mere Watan Ke Logon’ a patriotic song. The song is based on the soldiers of our country giving their lives for our freedom. She sang the song so beautifully that Jawaharlal Nehru moved to tears after listening to it. The song can is extremely well sung and can make anyone emotional even today. The beauty in her singing was that the people could connect with her. Everybody could feel the lyrics.

Symbol of Women Empowerment

Lata Mangeshkar rose to the prime of her career in an era where women were mostly seen as homemakers. She proved that women could take the responsibility of the family financially and emotionally. She became the epitome of women’s empowerment.
