“Life is short. Smile while you still have teeth.”

A vibrant smile is a key to winning hearts, but what exactly are we paying for a bright, clean smile? Only the money for a toothpaste tube. Well, not just that. We are paying much more than a few bucks. While shopping for a toothpaste tube, we end up bringing in much more chemicals than we imagine.

A healthy mouth is an essential component of a healthy body! Despite the fact that numerous studies show that good oral hygiene improves overall wellness, the majority of mainline dental care products comprise a slew of synthetic and even harmful ingredients.

Making handmade toothpaste is a simple and enjoyable project. It’s also a fun way to get kids excited about brushing their teeth. We all agree that when kids help make a recipe, they’re far more likely to try the finished product!

Pros Of Using Homemade Toothpaste

Commercial toothpaste shows that it aids in the removal of debris & plaque from the teeth and gum line. Advertisements show that these toothpaste may well have additional benefits such as whitening or sensitivity reduction. But what price are we paying to buy these glitters, we are not just paying for our health by consuming chemicals, but at the same time, we are damaging the earth at a huge rate.

Toothpaste tubes are made of aluminium and plastic, making recycling nearly impossible, and even if they do eventually recycle, it will take at least 500 years for them to decompose. Toothpaste tubes generate a large number of garbage in landfills without being noticed, and a variety of natural resources are exploited in their production.

If you’re wondering whether homemade toothpaste is beneficial to our oral health, the answer is, of course, yes. All of the functions of homemade toothpaste are performed by natural ingredients.

Why Make Homemade Toothpaste?

Baking soda and salt are both mildly abrasive, which aids in the cleaning and brightening of your teeth!

Salt can inhibit the growth of bacteria in the mouth, strengthen the gums, and even neutralize oral acids.

To avoid the sin of harming the environment while endangering your health due to the chemicals in them, let’s make some homemade toothpaste. One, they are free of chemicals and reduce waste in your daily life; two, you can select the products that best suit your tastes and needs.

Another advantage of using homemade toothpaste is that it is less expensive. You can make homemade toothpaste using ingredients found in your kitchen without spending a single penny.

How To Make Homemade Toothpaste?

Here’s a super simple toothpaste recipe that uses ingredients that most people already have in their kitchens.

Basic DIY Toothpaste Recipe

Water-based recipes, such as the first alternative below, will have a shorter shelf life, so we suggest only attempting to make small batches that will last about a week or two.

  • 2/3 cup baking soda
  • 1 tsp. fine sea salt
  • Filtered water
  • 1-2 tsp. organic arrowroot powder (optional thickener)

How To Make

It is a super simple process, all you need to do is, mix it all and there you go – TADA!!

Mix baking soda and salt well together.
Add water in small amounts, and stir the mixture well after each addition, until the paste reaches the desired consistency.
If more thickness is required, add 1 to 2 teaspoons of arrowroot powder and mix well.
You can use it for 1 to 2 weeks while keeping it in a cool, dark place.

Homemade Toothpaste – Coconut Oil

Oil-based toothpaste has a longer shelf life than water-based toothpaste, typically lasting between two and three weeks. Here’s a basic toothpaste recipe that uses coconut oil instead of water.

Ingredients

  • 2-3 tsp. baking soda
  • 1 tsp. fine sea salt
  • 1/4 cup organic coconut oil (or MCT oil)
  • 1-2 tsp. organic arrowroot powder (optional)

How To Make

Mix baking soda & salt.
To the dry mix, add lightened or MCT coconut oil, and stir well.
After you’ve combined all of the other ingredients, add 1 to 2 teaspoons of arrowroot powder to help thicken the paste. Begin with a small amount and gradually add more until the preferred thickness is reached.
Keep it cool and dark for up to 3 weeks.

Toothpaste containing solid coconut oil may become runny during the summer.
You can use either solid or liquid (MCT) coconut oil interchangeably in the oil-based recipe, but the quantities may need to be adjusted depending on the desired consistency.
You can dip your toothbrush into the paste directly, but this may introduce bacteria into the mix, causing your paste to spoil faster. To extend the life of the toothpaste, remove it from the jar with a small scoop as needed.
