Chakr Shield

The air pollution in the country is rising to alarming levels day by day. Millions of people suffer from diseases caused by air pollution. Breathing problems have become common. To manage the air pollution, Arpit Dhupar developed a technology named “Chakr Shield” that traps particulate matter emissions and uses it as ink to paint walls. The technology is environment-friendly and beneficial for the health of people living in Delhi or other polluted areas.

Work During College Years

In 2014, Arpit Dhupar graduated as a mechanical engineer. He always had a passion for helping people and developing new technology. During his college years, he developed a machine that could increase rice production by 25 percent and reduce urea consumption by 45 percent.

The Birth of the Chakr Shield

Arpit was born and brought up in Delhi. Since his childhood, he had been observant of the poor air quality in Delhi. He wanted to do something to reduce air pollution. One day, Arpit was drinking sugarcane juice from a vendor in Delhi by the road. The vendors usually use diesel engines to power their sugarcane crushing machines. He observed that the vendor had attached a pipe to the engine exhaust. As the vendor worked, the wall behind started to turn black. He realized that the air quality of Delhi was deteriorating day by day.

Research Findings

Arpit decided that something had to be done to improve the situation. Through further research, he found that globally 90 percent of the black carbon emissions enter the air through diesel vehicles and machines. Additionally, most of the deaths due to air pollution are caused in lower-middle and middle-income African and Asian countries. Even in India, such deaths and diseases due to air pollution are on a rise.

Chakr Innovation

Arpit Dhupar cofounded Chakr Innovation. He is also the Chief Technical Officer Of Chakr Innovation. The organization has created a machine that captures carbon emissions and uses them again. Chakr means ‘cycle’ in Hindi. The idea behind finding the organization was to complete the carbon cycle so that it does not end up in the environment.

How does the Chakr Shield Works?

The device that has been developed is a novel solvent-based technology known by the name of ‘Chakr Shield.’ It fits on the diesel exhaust, cools down the soot particles, and then captures them. At the same time, the gas passes through a series of solutions and meshes. The soot gets collected at the bottom of the exhaust in a collection bin. The meshes also get cleaned automatically. The carbon captured is transformed into non-toxic ink pigment, the same quality used in the printing industry. The captured particulate matter and soot can be used for printing and to paint walls.

Contribution to the Society and Awards

The device meets European standards of safety. According to the calculations done by the organization, the machine has captured 500 kilograms of particulate matter. It is enough to save approximately 6,00,000 individuals a year from breathing dirty air. The plan now is to deploy the device in chimneys that are used by small-scale industries. Arpit Dhupar has received various awards and recognition for his work. He has also won the award of the Young Champions Of Earth for Asia and the Pacific.
