Some people are passionate about the welfare of society. Such people give their all to help the ones in need. Today’s motivational story is of Ramu Dosapati, who spent a sum of Rupees 50 lakhs to provide the needy with 24*7 ration service during the COVID pandemic.
Ramu Dosapati’s Education and Family
Ramu Dosapati lives with his family in Hyderabad. He completed his MBA in human resource management from Osmania University. Ramu hails from a family of landlords from Telangana. Currently, he lives in a 2 BHK flat with his family in Lalbahadur Nagar. Ramu’s family comprises his wife, Shilpa, and two sons. Shilpa is a mathematics teacher by profession.
Experience of a Road Accident
Ramu Dosapati experienced a road accident in 2006. His wife was pregnant with their first child. He was worried about his family. Fortunately, he got well soon. That was the turning point in his life, and he decided to help others in need.
Helping Others During Various Adversities
In 2013, during the twin blats of Dilsukhnagar, Ramu helped the injured reach the hospital. He also arranged 150 liters of blood for them. He raised awareness about the harmful effects of single-use plastic on the environment. He distributed one lakh cloth and jute bags.
Ramu educated people to not cut the ends of the milk packet as it posed danger to the environment. During the floods in Hyderabad, he distributed drinking water, food, milk, and groceries to people in need.
Inspiration to Set Up the Rice ATM
What inspired Ramu to set up a Rice ATM in front of his house was Lakshmamma. He met Lakshmamma at a chicken stall in April. She is a watchman by profession. He saw her buying 10 kilograms of chicken for 2000 rupees. He picked up a conversation with her and asked her the reason for buying 10 kilograms of chicken.
During the conversation, she revealed that the migrant workers in the state were in a poor condition. Because of the lockdown, all the trains and other transport facilities had closed down. The migrant workers had lost their jobs, had no roof over their heads, and no food to eat. She was doing her bit by providing them with whatever food she could afford.
Decision to Help the Migrant workers
Ramu asked her how she was managing her expenses with the added expenses of the migrant workers. She said, ” I am local to this place. Everyone can understand what I want and will help me out. Nobody will help those migrant workers. I am doing my bit by helping them out.”
The conversation with Lakshmamma inspired Ramu Dosapati. He wondered that when a Watchman could put in all her saving to help others, why not him?
Services For The Needy
Ramu started serving home-cooked food to the migrant workers. Soon he realized that this increased the chances of spreading coronavirus. He switched to dry food grains. He started distributing grocery kits that comprised Atta, rice, daal, oil, sugar, salt, turmeric, tea powder, and a few other items.
Ramu Dosapati started his Rice ATM in front of his apartment under a tree. A board welcomed everyone looking for the grocery kit. It mentioned
“Come here and pick up ration, do not sleep with an empty stomach.”
Additional Help Provided by Ramu Dosapati
Besides providing food grains, Ramu has also provided temporary shelter to the migrant workers. He stopped 200 workers from traveling to their hometowns on foot. He helped them get a place to live in buildings that were under construction. Eventually, auto and cab drivers, local laborers, and housemaids from different parts of Hyderabad started approaching him for help.
Support of Family
During the entire process, Ramu’s family has been supportive. The family was planning to buy a 3 BHK flat and had saved the money for the same. Ramu Dosapati’s sons wanted separate bedrooms. When Ramu discussed with his family that he was planning to invest a sum of 50 lakhs in helping others, his family supported him.
Ramu’s sons readily agreed to stay in the 2 BHK flat. Also, they even said that they would not ask for pocket money, at least for a year. Shilpa, Ramu’s wife, also invested her salary in helping others. It is the support of his family that motivates and provides the strength to Ramu Dosapati to help others.
